CLUB NEWS- 2011

Spring 2011

When we introduced the Rigiflex safety boats at the beginning of last season I was slightly apprehensive as to whether they would be as good as our research suggested. I needn’t have worried because they proved to be fast, stable and manoeuverable. We had a naming ceremony in August when one boat was named ‘Page Buoy’ after Philip Page, and the other one was called ‘Hereward’s Wake’ after Hereward Cooke. The boats were also blessed by Father Howard Stoker.

Our next move is to improve the buoys that we use for racing. The existing buoys are inflatable and were designed to be put out before each race and brought in at the end. This is not really possible in our rapidly drying harbour and we leave them out for the whole season. This means that the buoys wear out quickly and John Seymour has been researching possible replacements. He has come up with a design that is meant for much heavier use and we have ordered three. The Cockle Club is also short of buoys and has ordered another three. This will begin to give us consistency with racing buoys in the harbour and the plan is to continue to replace our present buoys as and when they fail and thereby hopefully spread the cost over a few years. The buoys will be yellow, thick walled and do not need inflating.

I really look forward to seeing you on the water.
